Bicycle Love-Lilly

1. I think that the theme of this essay is that intimate and difficult forms of travel can help you find yourself. At the beginning of the story, Goodspeed is going through a hard time in her life, and ends up using her bike trip as a self-liberating and self-defining experience. She feels more positive about her life at the end of it.
"He paused and asked why I was riding alone and then answered for me while I was thinking. 'Un pelerinage,' he said. You're on a pilgrimage." This language struck me because it highlights the author's insecurity with her journey and shows one of the things that begins to change her mind. It shows her vulnerability.
"Later, as she hoisted her pack onto her back, I felt that her journey was also my own." This piece struck me because it wrapped up the essay in a reflective and true manner. Goodspeed has come full circle in her journey and is now ready to watch another embark on their own. It is also a good testament to human nature; we feel a connection to those going through similar things as us.
