I believe the theme of this essay is the experience of traveling is not just defined by the act itself, but also in the preparation leading up to it. She constantly emphasizes how she packed things just in case. Also, the majority of this essay is about her gear for the hiking trip, not just her climbing experience itself.
I believe the massive list of equipment did a good job at showing Keith's preparedness, better emphasizing the theme. I little bit of the list is "Wickling socks, vapor socks, hiking socks" (4).
I really enjoyed the imagery that Keith used as well. My favorite example is when Keith finally got to the top of the mountain and said "I climb to a view that it seems only gods should get. I am surrounded by White Mountains earning their name" (5). This gives me the view of layers upon layers of snow encasing the mountains that she is overlooking.
